Very Normal Activity: Strange Creature in Sibu Freaks Plantation Workers + Follow Up

Alright most of you must have watched or at least heard about the news of a strange creature which freaked out plantation workers in Sibu, Sarawak in late January. Well, in case you missed it, below is the video.

The story was that a team of Indonesian workers at an oil palm plantation came face to face with this strange animal. One of the workers claimed that it charged at them and so he hit it until it was knocked out and posed for the camera (pictured left). Fortunately, the creature regained consciousness and was forced to go back into the jungle.

As much as I object hitting a helpless animal let alone a potentially new cryptid in Borneo, the workers may had the rights to knock it out seeing how potentially dangerous the beast was. I mean look at it! Look at those claws! If I were the plantation worker I'd whack it too when I see this malnourished Smeagol with manicure issues come charging at me.

But as it turned out I've seen this creature and its picture floating in the internet (sic 9gag) and the Sarawak Forestry Corporation confirmed my speculation. That strange creature was a Helarctos malayanus or also known as a sun bear.

"Woi it's 6am why you switched on the lights I wanna sleep cannot ah?!"
Picture from a-z animals

Well instead of being corrupted by the One Ring. the bear found at the plantation was most likely suffering from a skin condition due to recent floods in Sarawak. And this bear disease which causes it to lose its fur happens to bears in other countries. So imagine the cute furry bear up there turning to look like its cousin in Leipzig zoo as shown below:

"Well, at least I still have my side burns and good personality"
Picture from dailymail.co.uk

But unlike the American counterpart where we capture shaky videos of strange animals and build a cult or TV shows around it, the Sarawak Forestry Corporation viewed the video as a distress call from the bear. Almost immediately the SFC launched the SWAT team to find the creature.

Nope, unlike the American fully-armed black-clad law enforcement counterpart, the SWAT here refers to Swift Wildlife Action Team which is conducting a search and rescue (SAR) operation to locate and help the sick bear. Kudos to them for taking such prompt initiative to conserve Sarawakian wildlife.

The SAR is still ongoing at the time of writing this post, but we can only hope and pray the ailing bear will be found alive and in time to be healed.

BONUS FAST FACTS - The sun bear is native to the tropical rainforest of Southeast Asia. They are also called as the "Honey Bear" due to their voracious appetite for honeycombs and honey. It is a protected species in Malaysia but little enforcement occurs. Luckily, there is a special rehabilitation and conservation centre for Bornean sun bears in Sandakan, Sabah managed by wildlife biologist Wong Siew Te. In addition, due to its diet the sun bear has a tongue measuring from 7.9 to 9.8 inch. Whoa! Imagine the things you can do with that!

Sago Worms Haram

Photo from lyick81.blogspot.com

The sago worms or ulat mulong or in Melanau si'et have been declared as haram for consumption by the Sarawak Mufti's Office today.

The reasons given are them being unclean and that they live in dual world or environment.

Haram means 'forbidden' and is a concept in Islam which is not only limited to food but also prohibits a Muslim from doing something harmful to themselves or to others in terms of health or social standing (e.g. theft, gambling, gossiping, adultery, drinking, smoking).

Now, this morning's news caught me by surprise. I myself have been consuming this grub for years along with other Melanau and non-Melanau Muslims. For one, they consume the sago tree trunk voraciously until they can undergo metamorphosis into the sago palm weevil or Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (pictured left), not unhygienic carcasses which would be understandable.

As for the 'dual worlds' or dua alam, this refers to animals living in two different environment like amphibious animals such as frogs, crocodiles (obviously) and the Swamp Creature. In what way is the sago grub considered a 'dual world' creature needs further explanation. Is it because it goes through metamorphosis? One stage living inside a trunk while at the latter stage flying around? If that's so then some species of birds which starts off inside a tree trunk or a hole in the ground before learning to fly are haram.

I may sound like criticising the professionals but then again the Quran has told Muslims to think critically (not follow blindly and chant death to the infidels/insert race like what many keyboard warriors are doing). Not that I'm doubting the research done to prove that they're haram, but I do wish to to receive more explanation on it either in tomorrow's news or in the Mufti's website. This is a sudden kill-switch to the hundred-years of Melanau tradition and culture, just like how telling vegetarians that vegetarian chicken is not okay one day.

P/S: Although haram, Muslims are permitted to consume haram things during the time of emergency e.g. war, famine, natural disaster, where all source of halal food is lost. And if you're wondering, the sago worm is high in protein and suitable if you're lost in the jungle with no food. The sago worm contains:

Skin Tight Jeans

Seriously how can people wear this thing? I was shopping for new jeans and to my frustration most of them are not as loose or well-ventilated as the ones I have. I remember what kinda cut I like (even stated on my current jeans) but no matter what size the jeans are, they seem to warp and hug the very soul out of your legs.
I'm a size 200 and I look fabulous with these skinny jeans.

I can feel my children in my scrotum suffocating and that's only in the fitting room. And this problem seems to linger every time I go shopping (during festive season and or when goblins made holes in my jeans). It's just luck I'll find the most comfortable jeans that allows me to NOT look like a hipster.

A typical hipster. Source: Wordpress

Russian Meteor

Yup, by now you've probably heard it or saw the video about how a meteor came crashing into Russian causing over 900 people injured due to the impact shock wave. But in case you haven't seen it, here's the video:

Like something out of an apocalyptic Hollywood movie, the meteor travelled 13-19KM per second (whoa!) before crashing into a lake(?) that shook buildings nearby, causing windows and glasses to break which led to the majority of the reported injuries.

With tonnes of telescopes watching the skies why no one saw it coming? Well the reason was because everyone's tracking a near-Earth asteroid passing by at the same time and the Russian meteor came from the direction of the sun.

Dad, I'm looking through the telescope I can't see what you are pointing at.

Those reasons seem legit. So it's none of those Russian shot down a UFO, Mayans, weapons test or even aliens. Either way the meteor crashed and unlike the movie Armageddon there is no way to stop a burning space rock, for now. We should be thankful it was not a catastrophic event.

Putin is just awesome.

Well overall it makes sense as it could be another Tunguska where a mysterious blast crater remains until today. I guess we can sleep easier thanks to some scientists who did all the maths for us and told us that the meteor came from somewhere from the asteroid belt beyond Mars and it was already on the way to our planet before most of us were born.

Hailstorm in Kuching

Well it is unusual considering Malaysia or Sarawak specifically stands in the equator where it's hot and humid. So does this mean the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" is feasible? Are we at the equator are going to experience a cold winter snap in a strange climate change as foreseen by ancient alien scientists? Too bad no videos or pictures within my reach though.

Anyways below is the news that piqued my interest:

KUCHING: Shopkeepers and members of the public at Central Park commercial centre here were astonished when a small hailstorm hit the area soon after the start of a heavy afternoon downpour yesterday.
Hundreds of pea-sized translucent globes of ice rained down with a loud clatter as they bounced off the metallic surfaces of motor vehicles and rooftops and onto the roads and  footways.

Some pieces of hail appeared to have had air bubbles frozen in their centre.

Many curious onlookers emerged to marvel at the unusual weather phenomenon that began around 4.30pm.
Two occupants of a sports utility vehicle that pulled up by the road shoulder when the storm started were spotted picking up the pellets of frozen rain and putting them in a plastic bag amid the tropical downpour.
However, the hailstorm lasted only a few minutes and the hail quickly melted away in the continuous rain.
The thunderstorm continued for half an hour before stopping altogether.

Driverless Car in Sibu

So Sibu is in the spotlight again and this time for... a haunted car, a ghost driving a Perodua Kenari recklessly and damages property in town near Island Road. Some who are superstitious claim that there was a ghost or demon that escaped from Hell early before the 15th of the seventh month in the Chinese calender, also known as the day of the Hungry Ghosts.

I don't know, it all seems suspiciously man's error (or woman). The driver let the car running with passenger inside while he went into the night market. Then the car suddenly reversed and drove forward randomly, hitting other cars and properties. It could be that the passenger accidentally shifted the gear to 'R' then it crashed, causing her to panic and the passenger shifted the gear to 'D' and whatever other gears available. And in the end to avoid being mobbed by angry drivers the blame was put on a ghost. Or it could've been a Poltergeist-class being who physically messed with the car.  Anyways you be the judge.

Source: The Borneo Post

SIBU: A car with no driver sped up and down Island Road on Friday at nightfall here sending chills down the spines of a huge crowd who witnessed this paranormal happening.

The hair-raising incident occurred at 7.15pm after the driver got out of the car to go to the night market, leaving a woman in the front passenger seat and the car engine on.

According to an eye-witness the car suddenly reversed at high speed, screeching, before ramming into a steel railing.

It then continued reversing before ramming into the front portion of another car.

The impact caused the other car to also reverse before ramming into another car behind it.
The driverless car then surged forward before reversing another time to slightly brush the side of a car behind it.

It reversed further after that and rammed into another car.

The car then made a 360 degree turn before surging forward again.

It then made another reverse and surge forward before ramming into the metal gate of a shop. Only then did it come to a halt.

The woman passenger was badly shaken but luckily sustained only minor cuts and bruises on her face, head, knee and arms in the incident.

As it was only a week from the 15th day of the seventh month of the Chinese lunar year – the day the Chinese believe the gates of hell would be opened for ghost and demons to roam the earth, many speculated that perhaps some might have snuck out before the stipulated time.

One of the witnesses said it was extremely eerie as it happened in the month of hungry ghost overlooking the fact that such an incident would be frightening anytime of the year.

He likened it to a scene in a horror movie, saying it was like watching “Nightmare on Elm Street”.

“How can a car travel at high speed up and down the road with no driver inside?” he asked with a quaver in his voice.

However, another eye-witness offered a more mundane explanation saying it could be due to a mechanical fault.

When the reporters arrived at the scene, the driver requested the reporters not to take any photos, but, this was stopped by policemen at the scene.

A policeman said this related to public interest and the reporters had the right to take photographs and report the incident.

Rescuers from the Fire and Rescue Department arrived with the policemen.

The rescuers took the frightened woman out and an ambulance sent her to the hospital where she was given outpatient treatment.

Another Sibu Businessman Shot Dead

 The victim.
The crime scene near Brooke Drive.
The victim's vehicle. All pics are not mine.

Barely a few days after the burial of the victims of the quadruple murder, Sibu is shocked once again by a broad daylight murder of a businessman. Around 10:30am Jan 11, Lau Leh Hing, a 42-year-old pub owner was shot point blank from the back as he was entering a shop to buy a safe deposit box. The shooters fled in a Proton Sage and no one caught a glimpse of its registration number.

Again people in town is worried and live in fear as the murder could've been gang-related and more "blood-for-blood" killing between gangs could blow up at any moment. Alas we've been reassured that the authorities will not let such a thing to happen and spoil the 2012 Chinese New Year mood. Read more about the shooting here.

Be careful out there.

Murder in Sibu (Update)

Picture from TheBorneoPost

So the brutal murder of 4 was considered solved with the arrest of a 17 year old teenager. He was suspected to have entered the attic, opened the ceiling panel and dropped into the victims' house (due to absence of wall divider between the houses) before murdering the unfortunate victims. His intention of doing so is a bit unclear but it could've been to steal some stuff but everything went downhill.

The teenager was said to be a bit mentally unstable, and the story went deeper due to the parties involved with the missing divider, but alas I don't wanna rely too much on rumors. Bottom line is Sibu is safe once again. Read more here.

Murder in Sibu

SIBU: Sarawak and some parts of Malaysia were kecoh about a horrifying murder in Kampua Town this week. From my staff at my workplace to the dudes at the gym, everyone was talking about the murder of a family that involved kids bludgeoned to death. Here's a summary.
Police carrying the bodies of the family out of the crime scene. Picture from Borneo Post.

A family near RTM road was found murdered by a blunt object around 7am. The 4 victims were:
1. Timber businessman Ling Tong Hock, 36
2. His son David, 10
3. His daughter Amy, 7
4. His mother Leong Nyuk Lan, 76

Ling divorced his first wife and kept his kids. He married to his second Li Xiao Lan, 28, who is from mainland China. There was a commotion downstairs and Ling decided to check it out, only to cause more commotion that spooked his second wife. She somehow survived and escaped through the window of their bedroom and fled towards the nearby coffee shop to seek help. Everyone arrived to find the 4 brutally murdered.

Police tried the CCTV installed at the house to catch a glimpse of the killer but failed. Li was remanded to help with police investigation.

Li Xiao Lan remanded for 7 days.

At first this could've been a business rivalry gone too far, but the people of this sleepy town would not commit such heinous act to the point of killing children. We'll wait how this story goes. At the mean time you can read more by clicking  here.

UPDATE: We have an update on the case here.

Serian-Sri Aman Road Runtuh

The broken road connection caused major traffic to all travelers and stray dogs.

The Serian-Sri Aman road collapsed or what local engineers call runtuh/roboh/pesak/tebik/putus/etc today causing a major disconnection between people travelling between the two areas. The incident at Kilometer 77 near Sebangkoi happened about 9:30pm last night probably due to rain or something more 2012-ish.

Whatever it is, please drive carefully especially during this wet monsoon-cum-flood season. Read the news here (Google Translate required).

I wonder if this is just coincidental with the wet season and has nothing to do with the recent earthquakes in New Zealand that might have caused shockwaves all the way here.

Little Boy's Hands Crushed by Men in China

Not sure what's the back story, but I suspect the boy was caught stealing and the mob surrounded him and punished him. I don't support this kind of inhumane punishment, he's just an 8 year-old boy. Supposedly happened in Canton (Southern China) on August 13th, 2011.

First it was the little girl who got ran over many times. Then this. What's this world turning into...

Cooking Oil Shortage!

First it was the chicken, now Sibu is facing a severe cooking oil shortage. Most supermarkets and kedai runcit have no cooking oil for sale and this could be blamed on panic buying which caused an artificial shortage. The theory is, large restaurants buy the small cheap cooking oils by the bulk, this leaves the regular household consumers with nothing. The near empty shelves make them think that there is a shortage and hence they buy as much cooking oil as they can. This panic buying leaves the other husbands and sons who like buy their groceries late with nothing.

So please, chill and don't panic. I'm not looking forward to eating expensive steamed chicken or waste my time going to 3-5 kedai looking for cooking oil. If you suspect the shopkeeper is hoarding or overcharging, quickly call the Consumer Ministry or Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri KPDN at +603-8882 5500, 084 329202 (Sibu) or go to their website.

iOS 5 Messed Up My Playlist

Imagine hearing those fearsome Russian Red Army soldiers singing alternative rock songs...

After the long wait to update my iPhone to iOS 5 (despite all the problems and 3200 errors) last night, I was somewhat impressed with the new features like newsstand, reminder, camera options, cleaner notification system etc. Then later today I was about to get pumped by listening to some good old Russian Red Army Choir "Katyusha"... Only to be interrupted by Staind.

My Danza Kuduro was OneRepublic, some songs were unplayable and Linkin Park turned Indonesian. I'll update you once I get the solution to this. At the mean time I'll enjoy Menunggu For The End by Linkin Pan... or watch my iPhone endlessly scroll through all my songs without playing any...

UPDATE: BTW, here's an update on how to fix the playback issue.

Chicken Shortage In Sarawak

There's been a serious chicken shortage in Sarawak for a few days now with places like KL Farming or CCK not having any chicken meat for sale at all. I thought this was just Sibu exclusive case, but apparently it's all over the State. So you can say chickens are going extinct in Sarawak.

What started as an already high RM9.00, chicken meat are now sold at RM13.50/kg thanks to the shortage. What the heck? We're exporting chickens from West Malaysia and the crisis is expected to last until next month.

Oh well, seafood it is then. Or alternatively you can go to KFC and buy some uncooked chickens from them. Or uh... remember the sugar and cooking oil shortage crises? Maybe some are unethically hoarding the chickens and you can get them from under the table or the back door...

London Riot - Bleeding Malaysian Student Robbed

In what appears to be like a typical movie plot where humanity collapse like dominoes after the US market plunged all time low, we were served with the London riot after a father of 4 was allegedly shot by the police. People who were pissed snowballed the whole thing and voila we have a burning, looting, rioting fiesta in London. If you do have friends or family there (check the riots map here), do tell them to be careful.

Sadly a video appeared from the chaos showing a teenage boy, a Malaysian student named Mohd Asyraf Raziq Rosli or Asyraf Haziq (whichever news is correct), bleeding (after being beaten up by another mob previously) before being robbed. Video recorded by Abdul. Contains blood and decadents. For inquiries you can contact the Malaysian High Commission Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah at +44-020-79190242 or wzaidi@kln.gov.my

Rooney Stripped By Liverpool Fans

I'm not sure if this guy just got balls. Or just plain stupid. Walking into a nest of Liverpool fanatics wearing a Manchester United jersey is something Kratos or Chuck Norris would do. As a Gunner I'm ashamed by some gooners booing fellow countrymen who wore the yellow national kit in the last 4-0 Arsenal-Malaysia Asia tour friendly match. But this...

C'mon dudes, be civilized! Stripping off a ManU's fan kit won't help you guys get the cup this season. Tonite we'll see if that poor topless dude will get his vindication with Malaysia-Liverpool match.

Malaysia vs Indonesia

It's Konfrontasi (again *sigh*). With Soccer. And Lasers!

Thanks to twitter from our neighbors, our players are now fearsome footballers with laser eyes created by some underground government project.

Last night's match was explosive and managed to put me off to watch BPL matches after that. Apart from the adrenaline-fueled explosive display of 3-0 killing spree from Malaysia to send the reds home, the match was also literally explosive. Supposedly, Malaysian fans threw firecrackers and aimed lasers at the Indonesians around the 53rd minute and this forced the referee Toma Masaaki to call off the game, supposedly. After the raging crowd of reds and yellows chilled a bit the match resumed and led to the 3-0.

Alas, after the match, there was a cyber-war between Malaysians and Indonesians about the supposedly controversial match with the latter side accused the Malaysians of supposedly played lasers at their keeper Markus, supposedly. The "Malaysia Cheat Laser" trended twitter that same night. Sadly we were zerg-rushed by the Indonesians online (240 million of them against 28 million of us) so it really did looked like we were the guilty party. But were we?

Bollocks. They're just pissed we won and we're not guilty. Here are the reasons:

1. Lasers

This is the picture that is supposedly showing the Malaysian fans pointing laser at the field to blind the keeper. Apparently it could be a fact that many viewers are color blind OR they did not see the match at all and proceeded to flame us. At Bukit Jalil last night, the stadium was filled with reds (Indonesian) on one side and yellows (Malaysians) on other. This was viewed from a 42" LCD TV and I can confirm there were no small patch of black shirts mourners who just sat there without waving their respective national flags. Or more Arab-looking. I do not recall wearing the Arabic headgear or keffiyehs as a cultural norm in Malaysia (look at the crowd, I counted 6). FAIL.

2. Scores

How are these scores considered cheating? These are real skills and look at how pathetic Indonesian defense was. Oh this occurred in the 60th-70th minutes. The firecracker & laser incident that put a halt to the game was at the 50th. Unless the players have a time-lag response issue, there is no way the 50th minutes lasers helped the Malaysians to cheat to get the goals in the last quarter of the match. Or is it possible the lasers have some effect to the players similar to how kryptonite weakens Superman?

3. Did you even watch the game?!
Very few Indonesians humbly accepted their defeat due to their poor defenses as seen in the match. But these few were shot by fellow countrymen (maybe 99% of them that happen to not watch the match) who blasted Malingsial as cheaters. -.-

This was just the first leg of the finals. I'm not sure what will happen in the decisive 2nd leg in Jakarta on the 29th December. Maybe bomohs and black magic will be used. Or we might see the usage of the biggest super laser weaponry known to man; the Empire's Death Star blasting everyone to oblivion from space... Now we can only hope for the players to come out of the match in one piece and if possible alive.
And perhaps hope for some help from Japan!

You can read the match report here, although it's less dramatic and has more texts.

Fly the Malaysian Air

Foreigners' Guide to the Malaysian Air Travel Culture
First time travelling into Malaysia? Or a Malaysian that's going to use the airplane for the first time? Then let me share with you an air travel culture that's uniquely Malaysia :)

Only in Malaysia (most parts) will you see passengers getting out of their seats, opening and claiming their luggage from the overhead compartment, or ready to jump off the plane when the captain announces the aircraft's arrival (not fully landed). It is a 'herd-effect' whereby when more than 50% of the passengers stand up to claim their luggage and the remaining 49% will follow suit. However there is a minority of 1% that's willing to avoid the long queue of waiting for the aircraft door to open by sitting at their seats for the whole process.

When this happens you could either choose to join the 99% passengers in the queue or the 1% sitting minority. Both are enjoyable traveling experiences. If you are curious on what this culture is called, it is known as kiasuism (key-ah-sue-ism) with practitioners called as kiasu (key-ah-sue). It is advisable for you to point out at the 99% and say "hey, you are kiasu!"

Then when you reach the terminal prior to luggage claim, toilets are readily available after a few minutes of walking along the terminal inclusive of stairs and/or escalators. Bring extra tissues as the toilet rolls at the toilets are on high demand everyday so supplies are limited. And when you are doing your business enjoy the advertisement posted at the doors which may provide useful contacts during your stay.
Let me translate for you "No. 1 liar in Sarikei and Sibu * Mr Lau"

Tension With Indonesia Again

Indonesian extremists threatened to 'sweep' Malaysians off Indonesia, again.
While Malaysia Barat is tearing themselves apart from the recent case of the racist principal telling Chinese kids to go back China, trouble is brewing with our neighbor to the south. Barely a year ago the Benteng Demokrasi Rakyat (BENDERA) announced that they will invade Malaysia to cause havoc with its 40 well-trained, bamboo-armed and black-magic-protected men.

And a few days ago, the action of Malaysia capturing 3 Indonesian maritime officers triggered another proxy war, with Indonesia 'silently' retaliating by arresting Malaysian fishermen. The whole thing snow balled into a crisis as protesters threw shit at the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta. The nationalist group BENDERA then declared another 'sweep' to kick off Malaysians allegedly violating Indonesia's sovereignty out of their country. It's officially the season to 'ganyang Malaysia' again.

Now at this point I share your blurness on what really pissed them off to the point of throwing human faeces at the embassy. This simple but crucial disclosure may reveal a bit why the tension between the two countries are on high again:

"...according to Malaysian officials, they received satellite photos that the 15 fishermen in five boats were indeed in Malaysian territory – their GPS clearly showed this. An Indonesian maritime boat which encroached into Tanjung Punggai in Kota Tinggi confronted the boats and arrested seven fishermen.

Good sense prevailed as Malaysia released the Indonesian maritime officers while Indonesia sent the fishermen home to Malaysia on Aug 17.

...the Indonesian government sent a diplomatic note to protest the arrest, claiming that Malaysia had violated Indonesian integrity because the incident occurred in Indonesian waters.

Indonesia’s Maritime and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad said Indonesia freed the seven fishermen due to lack of proof...because he needs to pacify his countrymen to show that Indonesia is standing up to Malaysia (Kiasu la).

Malaysia has since quietly responded to the note and made it clear that the Indonesians had encroached into Malaysian waters"

Source: The Star

To summarize, there's a water border dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia. This dispute caused the clash of jurisdiction between the two countries who claimed the incident occurred in THEIR territory. BENDERA just jumped in to light up the fuels of war and all these protests came to be. What started as a hate-war accusing Malaysia of 'curi budaya' or stealing the culture of Indonesia last year is now made bigger with this recent events.

It all started with this...

Then this 'sapu Malaysia', roadbloacks to spot-check for Malaysians and ask them to GTFO...

mmm... she's hot
And we're supposed to fight with these BENDERA elites...

The Indonesian government does not endorse nor support these extremists' actions. BENDERA's October 8th 2009 invasion is way overdue by almost a year. And this fresh ganyang Malaysia thing is predicted to pass away with time. Malaysians in Indonesia should take care of themselves. If BENDERA's willing to grab shit and throw it with rage at the embassy, who knows what else they're capable of while ignoring all the don'ts during this Ramadhan.

Don't join in the fray, just be rational and let us get a move on with work, assignments, life etc.
