Doomsday (2008)

DOOMSDAY
Mankind has an Expiration Date
Another post-apocalyptic movie that intrigued my roommate who intro-ed me to it. So I decided to give it a try.

SPOILER ALERT! THE END IS NIGH! REPENT!
We started off with a brief intro of northern United Kingdom being ravaged by a deadly plague ala the bubonic plague, but in this movie it's known as the Reaper plague, which forced the government to quarantine the area and sealed it off from the outside world for good (it's even declared as a no-fly zone). And the world is safe once again...

Until 10 years later. The plague started to appear in places outside the quarantined area. At the government noticed that there are survivors in the quarantined area, and hence sent a small band of special ops into it in hopes of finding a cure. Eden (the main character) was one of the excursion member (and she was a wee little girl who lost an eye when she and her mom tried to flee the plague 10 years ago, only Eden made it).

In the quarantined area, Eden and her buddies were ambushed by a mob of savage testosterone/estrogen fueled punks. Eden got separated from her group and was taken hostage along with other fortunate special ops member. Eden was imprisoned, and her teammate turned into dinner (those punks literally had him for dinner; BBQing and slicing him up WTFBBQ o_0).

Anyways Eden managed to escape from her prison, had a nifty cat-fight with her captors (which include the girlfriend of the punk's leader who was away at the BBQ) which ended with the latter's head decapitated (sh*t dude holy cow! 0_o). Eden fled the punks' den with another captive (a girl who knew Dr. Kane, the dude who would probably knew the cure) and regrouped with the other teammates at the train station with the angry punk mob chasing behind them. Eden and the crew escaped in a train that chugged away slowly and safely...

The train stopped in the middle of nowhere near an entrance that supposedly will lead the weary crew to Dr. Kane. The entrance led to a tunnel which is filled with supplies, electronics and sh*t. When they reach the other side of the tunnel, they were confronted by medieval knights riding horses, who took them in as captives and brought them to a lakeside castle.

In the castle they met Dr. Kane, who was the 'king' of his new empire. His empire, or just the people in the castle anyways, are living in a complete medieval environment. Dr. Kane was so pissed off with Eden and her 'kind' that sealed Dr. Kane and the other survivors in the quarantined area and left them to rot and die. Turned out the survivors were immune to the plague, and to punish the non-immunes who are coming back licking, Dr. Kane sent Eden to a gladiator-style match. Without much action apart from dodging and running, Eden whacked the iron-clad dude and left him bleeding and dead. Then her other teammates managed to escape the dungeon and blasted their way out, helping Eden to escape in the process.

Eden and the crew fled back to the tunnel cum supply cache room with Dr. Kane's men chasing them from behind. Eden and the gang sealed the tunnel off and escaped in an expensive looking car.

Knowing that the people who are immune to the plague might hold the cure, they decided to give the girl (the one Eden helped to bust out of the punk prison) to the government. And so they cruised along the beautiful countryside road heading towards the border. Until the angry punk mob caught up with them.

Now with modded vehicles, the punks, especially the leader, want Eden and her crew dead (come one, his girlfriend got decapitated, and the leader seriously taped them back together and let her 'ride' shotgun with him in his car). Some cool road chase and carnage ensued. And as predicted it ended with all the punks blew up to pieces Burnout style and the leader decapitated as well.

Shortly after the government arrived in helicopters and obtained the immune girl. The crew followed the government home, but Eden decided to return back into the quarantined zone (must be nostalgic issues). She returned to the silenced remaining punk mob in the zone, and self-proclaimed herself as the punk's new leader. THE END.

Plot:

Storyline wise, um, it had a great introduction but gradually it kinda got ridiculously off and predictable. Basically it's just about Eden going into the quarantine zone to find a cure, found the cure and come back. And frankly speaking, I'm not sure what to say about this movie, it's just meh.

Graphics:

Nothing fancy, just some northern British city that was photoshopped into something out of any typical poast-apocalyptic movie; dark, gloomy, deteriorating, etc.

Gore & Violence Effects:

Owh hell yeah! As a fan of gore and violence, this movie gets three thumbs up from me. Decapitating head, splattering blood, limbs dismembering etc. were nicely done. The BBQ part seriously made me o_0 WTFBBQed.

Sounds/Musics:

A British movie typically has bad sense of music since they focus more on the talking, the same applies for Doomsday. The music is somehow uneasily piercing to my ears (either it's my ears or my sounds system, or just the movie's music).

Ham's Rant:
Storyline is somewhat a bit slightly new for a British post-apocalyptic movie world. The gore and violence rocks!!! W00t!!!

Ham's Rave:
WTF? This movie is like a hodge-podge of Resident Evil, Dawn of the Dead, Route 66, King Author and other typical post-apocalyptic movies.

Ham Also Notices:
- Like some western movies, the black dude always die before the credit rolls up
- Not for lover of fuzzy things, a rabbit was shot to bits in a glorious goriest way
- Some nudity, from the females side, but no biggie since there's no sex scene
- Some essence of SM, from the punks' side (the leader's "pet" to be precise)
